The spotted lanternfly has become one of the most disruptive invasive insect pests in the state, and understanding what to do about it can save your trees, your yard, and your sanity.

What Is the Spotted Lanternfly and Why Is It a Problem in New Jersey?

The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper that originates from China, India, and Vietnam. It was first detected in the United States in 2014 in Berks County in southeastern Pennsylvania, and by 2018, it had crossed into New Jersey, where populations were initially found in Warren, Mercer, and Hunterdon counties.

Since then, spread has been rapid. All 21 New Jersey counties have confirmed spotted lanternfly presence. The New Jersey Department of Agriculture maintains a statewide quarantine zone due to widespread presence, and New Jersey has an eight-county quarantine for SLF that includes counties such as Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester. Quarantine compliance helps protect New Jersey’s agricultural, forestry, and natural resources from further damage.

Why should homeowners care? Because this invasive species doesn’t just affect farms and vineyards. Spotted lanternflies cause stress and weaken trees and crops by sucking sap directly from stems, trunks, and branches. They feed on over 70 plant species – including many of the shade trees, fruit trees, and ornamentals that make New Jersey yards valuable and enjoyable.

Beyond the damage to plant health, the insect creates a daily quality-of-life problem. Feeding spotted lanternfly adults and nymphs excrete large quantities of a sugary substance called honeydew, which coats outdoor furniture, lawn furniture, vehicles, and walkways. That honeydew then promotes the growth of black sooty mold, turning surfaces dark and slippery. For many homeowners, the spotted lanternfly in New Jersey is both a serious invasive pest and a persistent nuisance pest that disrupts outdoor living from late summer through fall.

How Can You Identify a Spotted Lanternfly Infestation?

Accurate identification across all life stages is essential because each stage requires different management timing. The spotted lanternfly goes through distinct phases each year, and knowing what to look for – and when – gives you a head start on control.

Egg Masses (September–April)

Females lay eggs in masses of 30 to 50, with each egg mass containing about 35 individual eggs on average. Fresh egg masses are covered with a gray, waxy coating that resembles smeared mud. As winter progresses, this covering dries, cracks, and turns tan. Egg masses are roughly one inch long and can be laid on virtually any smooth surfaces – tree bark, rocks, fence posts, outdoor equipment, vehicles, grills, and even lawn furniture.

Eggs hatch in the spring, typically from April through June, depending on temperatures.

Nymphs (April–July)

Nymphs hatch from eggs in April and mature by late July, passing through four growth stages. Early-stage lanternfly nymphs (first through third instars) are small, black with white spots, and tend to feed on new growth, herbaceous plants, and young shoots. The fourth instar is larger and develops striking red and black coloring with white spots, usually appearing in July.

Both nymphs and adults are strong hoppers. You’ll find them on stems, trunks, and understory plants near preferred host trees.

Adults (July–November)

Adults emerge in late July and are present from July through early November. An adult spotted lanternfly is approximately one inch long with gray forewings marked by black spots. When startled or in flight, the bright red, black, and white hind wings become visible.

Spotted lanternfly adults feed heavily through late summer and fall. They lay eggs from September through November before dying off with the first hard frosts.

Where to Look

SLF egg masses can be found on various outdoor items – check outdoor furniture, playground equipment, stone walls, firewood stacks, trailers, and vehicles. During the growing season, scout tree trunks (especially tree of heaven, maples, and river birch), grape vines, and shrub stems for clustered nymphs and adults.

What Damage Can Spotted Lanternflies Cause to Trees?

Spotted lanternfly feeding works differently from chewing insect pests. Both nymphs and adults use piercing-sucking mouthparts to tap into plant sap, withdrawing sugars and nutrients that the plant needs for growth and energy storage. This process is sometimes called SLF feeding, and the effects are cumulative.

Direct Feeding Damage

When high populations of spotted lanternflies feed on a single tree, they deplete carbohydrate reserves and reduce the tree’s ability to grow, resist disease, and recover from other stressors. Feeding damage can include:

  • Wilting and curling of foliage
  • Oozing or bleeding sap from bark wounds
  • Localized branch damage and dieback (called “flagging”)
  • Reduced fruit yield on grapevines and fruit trees

SLF feeding can weaken grapevines and other sensitive plants to the point of vine death after repeated heavy seasons.

Honeydew and Sooty Mold

As adults feed, they excrete honeydew in large quantities. This sticky residue drips onto everything below – leaves, branches, decks, cars, and vulnerable plants in the understory. Honeydew promotes the growth of black sooty mold on plants and outdoor surfaces, creating a dark, unsightly coating.

Sooty mold from SLF honeydew reduces photosynthesis in plants by blocking light from reaching leaf surfaces. This secondary effect can weaken understory plants and make fruit unmarketable.

The Nuisance Factor

Beyond plant damage, feeding produces honeydew that attracts other nuisance insects – bees, wasps, ants, and other insects congregate around heavily infested areas. Heavy infestations can impact resident quality of life during late summer and autumn, turning patios and outdoor spaces into sticky, insect-filled zones.

The severity of damage varies. A lightly infested mature shade tree may show few visible symptoms, while a young sapling, a backyard grapevine, or a tree already stressed by drought may decline rapidly under the same pressure.

Which Trees and Plants Attract Spotted Lanternflies?

The spotted lanternfly feeds on over 70 plant species, but it doesn’t treat them all equally. Understanding which trees attract the heaviest feeding helps you prioritize monitoring and protection.

Tree of Heaven: The Primary Host

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is the preferred host plant for spotted lanternfly. This invasive species is itself a fast-growing weed tree commonly found along New Jersey highways, rail corridors, vacant lots, and disturbed areas. SLF populations are almost always denser near stands of tree of heaven, and adults prefer it for late-season feeding and egg-laying.

Removing tree of heaven can help manage spotted lanternfly populations on your property, but the tree resprouts aggressively and typically requires herbicide treatment of cut stumps to prevent regrowth.

Early-instar nymphs feed more broadly on herbaceous plants, shrubs, and new growth, while adults feed heavily on woody hosts. This seasonal shift means your entire yard may host lanternfly nymphs in spring even if your largest trees are the main target in fall.

What Should You Do If You Find Spotted Lanternflies?

Public education is vital for the monitoring and control of the spotted lanternfly. The widespread presence of this invasive pest has shifted the focus from eradication to long-term management, and every homeowner has a role to play.

Kill on Sight

State and local agricultural agencies urge residents to physically kill spotted lanternflies upon sight. Adults can be stomped or crushed. Nymphs can be knocked into a container of soapy water. This may seem primitive, but in residential settings, consistent physical removal reduces local SLF populations over time.

Scrape and Destroy Egg Masses

Residents are encouraged to scrape and destroy egg masses to control lanternfly populations. Between October and April, inspect trees, fences, outdoor equipment, stone walls, and any flat surface for the telltale mud-like egg masses.

Use a plastic card or putty knife to scrape masses into a plastic bag or container filled with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer. Seal and dispose of the bag in the trash. Each mass you destroy eliminates roughly 35 potential nymphs from the next generation.

Inspect Before You Move

Residents must inspect vehicles for SLF before traveling, especially when leaving a quarantine zone. Check wheel wells, bumpers, roof racks, and trailer beds. Residents should inspect outdoor items for lanternfly presence before moving them out of infested areas – this includes firewood, potted plants, outdoor furniture, grills, and recreational equipment.

How Can You Control Spotted Lanternflies in Your Yard?

Integrated Pest Management strategies dictate management practices for lanternflies, combining physical, cultural, and – when necessary – chemical control methods. The goal isn’t complete eradication (which isn’t realistic for most properties) but rather suppression to levels that protect your most important trees and plants.

Physical Removal and Monitoring

Start with the basics:

  • Egg mass scraping: The single most effective action a homeowner can take. Insecticidal oils can kill up to 75% of spotted lanternfly eggs when applied to masses during winter.
  • Trapping: Circle traps are preferred over sticky traps to capture spotted lanternflies safely, as they reduce the risk of catching native insects, birds, and other animals. Traps can capture large numbers of spotted lanternfly nymphs during the active season.
  • Physical killing: Nymphs and adults of the spotted lanternfly can be crushed or destroyed to manage their populations. A boot, a fly swatter, or a container of soapy water all work.

When Chemical Control Is Appropriate

Insecticides can effectively kill spotted lanternflies on contact, but they should be used thoughtfully. Control programs use targeted insecticide applications rather than broad area spraying. This protects beneficial insects, native insects, pollinators, and water quality.

Options range from insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils (lower risk to natural enemies) to systemic products like dinotefuran that move through plant tissue and kill feeding insects over a longer period. Systemic treatments, trunk injections, and soil drenches on large trees should be performed by licensed professionals to minimize off-target impacts.

Avoid indiscriminate pesticide use. Blanket spraying harms other insects in your yard – including the natural enemies and biological control organisms that help keep many insect pests in check.

Cultural Practices

  • Remove or treat the tree of heaven on your property to eliminate the primary host
  • Maintain overall tree health through proper watering, mulching, and pruning
  • Avoid moving firewood, brush, or yard waste from heavily infested areas

Biological control options are still under active research. Generalist predators like spiders, praying mantises, and some bird species do feed on spotted lanternflies, but their impact at current population levels is limited. Specialized parasitoid wasps from SLF’s native range are being evaluated, but none are approved for release in New Jersey yet.

Can Spotted Lanternflies Kill Your Trees?

This is the question most New Jersey homeowners want answered, and the honest answer is: it depends.

Severity and Risk Factors

For healthy, mature hardwood trees and shade trees – red maple, silver maple, river birch, black walnut – a single season of spotted lanternfly feeding is unlikely to cause death. You may see reduced growth, some branch dieback, and cosmetic damage from sooty mold, but these trees generally survive.

The situation is different for:

  • Young saplings and newly planted trees: Smaller root systems and less stored energy make them far more vulnerable to the stress of heavy sap loss.
  • Grape vines: Among the most susceptible. Repeated heavy infestations can kill vines outright and devastate agricultural crops.
  • Trees already under stress: Drought, compacted soil, root damage from construction, disease, or other insect pests all reduce a tree’s ability to tolerate SLF feeding on top of everything else.

  • Water deeply during dry periods, especially for young trees
  • Maintain a proper mulch ring (avoid piling mulch against the trunk)

  • Monitor for other insect pests and diseases that compound the problem

A tree in good condition can tolerate a level of feeding that would push a stressed tree into serious decline. Think of SLF management as one piece of broader plant health care.
